Canton Fair for Egypt

The Canton Fair Guide for Egyptian and MENA Importers

For an Egyptian or MENA importer, the Canton Fair is the fastest way to stand in front of thousands of Chinese suppliers in a single week, and the easiest place to leave with a stack of contacts that go nowhere. This guide covers what a buyer from Egypt specifically needs to plan: the visa and travel side, which of the three phases fits your products, and the verification and shipping work that turns a fair contact into delivered cargo in Egypt.

The Opportunity

Why does the Canton Fair matter specifically for Egyptian and MENA buyers?

Egyptian and MENA importers already depend on China for a large share of what they sell, and the Canton Fair is the densest concentration of Chinese suppliers they will ever get to stand in front of. It runs twice a year at the Canton Fair Complex in the Pazhou district of Guangzhou, the same city where X Global Trade has its China office. The fair itself operates buyer-side services aimed at the Middle East, including online sourcing matchmaking and live-streamed tour sessions, and attendance from Egypt and the wider region has been growing edition on edition.

The fair matters more from Egypt than it does for a buyer next door in Europe, not less. A scouting trip from Cairo is a long-haul commitment of cost and time, so you cannot casually go back next month to re-check a supplier. For many importers the fair is the only in-person supplier contact they will have all year. That makes the preparation before the doors open and the verification after they close the parts that decide whether the trip pays for itself, and both are exactly where a Guangzhou-based partner changes the outcome.

Trip Planning

What does an Egyptian buyer need to plan that most Canton Fair guides skip?

Start with the visa. Egyptian passport holders need a visa to enter mainland China, and fair attendees typically apply for a business visa supported by the official invitation letter the fair issues to registered buyers. Apply well ahead of travel, because the fair period is peak season for both applications and flights. XGT provides visa invitation support for the trip to China and handles the logistics around the visit, so the paperwork is moving while you plan the rest.

Then the travel itself. Cairo to Guangzhou is a long-haul journey, usually with one connection, and both flights and Guangzhou hotel rooms fill up and rise in price across the fair weeks, so book early and budget a travel day on each side. During the fair, XGT gives scheduling assistance for rides, flights, and other transportation, and a bilingual translator and support stay with the buyer throughout, which matters as much in a hotel-lobby supplier meeting as it does in the exhibition hall.

Finally, decide whether to go in person at all. A buyer with one or two clear product targets can get more out of XGT attending on their behalf, at a fraction of the travel cost, than out of an unprepared personal trip. When a trip does make sense, the economics work when fair days are paired with visits to shortlisted factories around Guangzhou. The existing Canton Fair Sourcing Support page covers the visit-or-not question in more detail.

  • A business visa for mainland China, supported by the fair's official invitation letter
  • Visa invitation support and trip logistics arranged from XGT's Guangzhou office
  • Flights and hotels booked early, before fair-period demand pushes prices up
  • A clear decision on attending in person versus sending XGT to represent you

Timing

Which Canton Fair phase matters for your product category?

Every edition is split into three phases that group different sectors, and the halls for a sector are only open during its phase, so going for the wrong week means the suppliers you came for are not there. For the 140th edition in autumn 2026, Phase 1 runs October 15 to 19 and covers electronics, machinery, hardware, vehicles, and new energy. Phase 2 runs October 23 to 27 and covers consumer goods, gifts, home decor, and building materials. Phase 3 runs October 31 to November 4 and covers textiles and garments, food, and health and medical products.

Map the phase to what XGT actually sources. Phase 1 is where electric vehicles and EV components sit, a sector XGT has documented project experience in and covers in a dedicated guide. Phase 2 covers the consumer goods, home, and building-materials categories that construction and fit-out buyers work with. Phase 3 covers textiles and food. If your sourcing list crosses categories, you either attend more than one phase or split the fair with XGT, with the team covering the phases or days you cannot be there for and carrying every contact into the same after-fair process.

  • Phase 1: electronics, machinery, hardware, vehicles, and new energy, including electric vehicles
  • Phase 2: consumer goods, gifts, home decor, and building materials
  • Phase 3: textiles and garments, food, and health and medical products

Where Deals Happen

What happens after the Canton Fair, and why does it decide the outcome?

The fair produces contacts; the weeks after it produce deals. Most "how to attend the Canton Fair" guides stop at the exhibition hall, but between the handshake at a booth and a purchase order sit the checks the fair cannot give you, and they come down to five questions. Who should we buy from is a verification question: a business license check, confirmation that the exhibitor is the manufacturer rather than a trading company, and a factory visit. What should we pay is a negotiation question: a formal quotation against your written specification, benchmarked against other suppliers and negotiated on minimum order quantity, packaging, payment terms, and lead time, in Chinese.

The last three questions carry the shipment. Can the supplier actually execute the order is answered with capacity checks, samples, and a pre-shipment inspection before final payment is released. What the product will really cost once it lands in Egypt is a landed-cost calculation, not the booth price: product price plus origin charges, freight, insurance, customs duty, taxes, and local fees. How you move from supplier selection to delivery is the logistics chain: payment structured around inspection milestones, freight from China to Egypt, ACI and CargoX filing, GOEIC compliance where it applies, customs clearance at Sokhna or Alexandria, and delivery to your warehouse. XGT operates every one of these stages inside one company.

  • Who should we buy from? License checks, confirming the exhibitor is the real manufacturer, and a factory visit.
  • What should we pay? A formal quote against your specification, benchmarked and negotiated on quantity, packaging, terms, and lead time.
  • Can the supplier execute the order? Capacity checks, samples, and pre-shipment inspection before final payment.
  • What will it cost landed in Egypt? Landed cost: product price plus origin charges, freight, insurance, customs duty, taxes, and local fees.
  • How do we get from selection to delivery? Milestone payments, freight to Egypt, ACI, CargoX and GOEIC compliance, customs clearance, and final delivery.

Common Traps

What are the five problems a first-time Canton Fair buyer runs into?

These are the specific ways a first fair goes wrong for an importer working without support on the ground. None of them are about the fair being a bad place to source; they are about what the fair does not do for you.

  • Too many suppliers to realistically evaluate alone. A single phase can fill every day you have, and a buyer working solo runs out of time long before running out of booths.
  • Every booth looks equally professional. The samples and photos on display do not confirm that the factory behind the booth matches what is presented, or that the exhibitor manufactures the product at all.
  • The booth quotation is a starting point, not final terms. Minimum order quantity, packaging, payment terms, and lead time are all still open to negotiation after the fair.
  • Supplier price is not landed cost. The real number is the product price plus origin costs, freight, insurance, customs, taxes, and local charges combined.
  • Most buyers have nobody left in China once they fly home. Follow-up, verification, samples, and inspection all happen after the fair, which is where XGT's Guangzhou operation matters.

Checklist

What should an Egyptian buyer do and avoid at the Canton Fair?

A concrete checklist for the fair floor and the weeks around it. The aim is to arrive with a plan and leave with a shortlist you can act on, not a bag of catalogues.

  • Do: bring a defined product list rather than a plan to see what is available.
  • Do: set a target price range before you arrive.
  • Do: bring technical specifications for any machinery, automotive, or industrial products.
  • Do: compare several suppliers before deciding, not just the first strong booth.
  • Do: ask for both EXW and FOB pricing so quotes compare on the same basis.
  • Do: ask about minimum order quantity and lead time in the first conversation.
  • Do: visit the factory for any order size that matters.
  • Do: request samples rather than relying on booth photos.
  • Do: calculate landed cost in Egypt before comparing supplier prices.
  • Do not: buy on booth impression alone.
  • Do not: assume that Made in China means the exhibitor is the manufacturer rather than a trading company or reseller.
  • Do not: default to the cheapest quote without weighing defect risk and delays.
  • Do not: pay a large deposit before any supplier verification.
  • Do not: ignore packaging, which affects damage rates, container utilization, and freight cost.
  • Do not: leave customs and import planning until after the purchase decision.
  • Do not: rely only on WhatsApp or WeChat promises without documented terms.
  • Do not: leave the fair with a stack of business cards and no follow-up system.

FAQ

Questions, Answered

You do not have to travel. For a buyer with one or two clear product targets, XGT can attend on your behalf from its Guangzhou office, shortlist and meet suppliers against your brief, and report back with structured notes, for a fraction of the cost of the trip. A personal visit pays off when you have a broad or technical sourcing list, want to build supplier relationships face to face, or plan to pair fair days with factory visits around Guangzhou. Many buyers combine both: XGT covers the phases or days they cannot attend and handles all of the follow-up afterwards.

The fair compresses months of supplier discovery into one week and puts thousands of exhibitors in one place, which is both its advantage and its risk. Sourcing outside the fair is slower but more deliberate: suppliers are researched, contacted, and verified one at a time without fair-week time pressure. The verification, sampling, negotiation, and shipping work is identical either way. The fair is a discovery event; it does not replace the checks that turn a booth contact into a supplier you can safely pay.

Egyptian passport holders need a visa to enter mainland China. Fair attendees typically apply for a business visa, supported by the official invitation letter the fair issues to registered buyers. Apply well before you travel, because the fair period is peak season for both applications and flights. XGT provides visa invitation support for the trip to China and arranges the logistics around the visit. Confirm the current requirements with the Chinese consulate, since visa rules change.

Rarely straight away. A fair contact still has to be verified, quoted against your specification, sampled, and negotiated, and production usually starts only after a deposit against agreed terms. Once goods are made and pass pre-shipment inspection, sea freight from China to Egypt typically runs 22 to 30 days and air freight 3 to 7 days, based on XGT's lane data, plus customs clearance on arrival. Plan for several weeks of supplier work after the fair before the first shipment moves. XGT runs both stages, from post-fair verification through freight and Egyptian customs.
